Why is breastfeeding causing me back pain?

For many new mothers breastfeeding is another skill that takes time to get the hang of.  Lots of mums wonder if their baby’s feeding well and getting enough milk – especially in the first few days. Focus is primarily on the baby and their needs but you must make sure you are looking after your own needs too!

The most obvious connection between breastfeeding and back pain is posture. The first thing to do if you notice any aches and pains in your back, neck, or shoulders whilst feeding is to consider the position you are in and how well supported you are. Try sitting in a chair with a back and arm rests, or use cushions to create a comfortable fixed position. Play around with this until your shoulders are relaxed, and your back softens. Also, rest your head if you can, or avoid straining to look down at your baby for too long – which we know can be hard in those first few weeks!

If you don’t get on with a position immediately then don’t feel disheartened and give up.  Try the same position again in a few weeks’ time as baby’s weight and strength play a role in what’s comfortable too.
