What is Cranial Osteopathy?
Cranial osteopathy is a very gentle, safe, effective and non-manipulative technique which involves the use of light pressure to enable the body to release tensions and strains. Because of the gentle nature of cranial osteopathy, it is highly suitable for treating babies and young children and can help address the aches and pains that new-borns might struggle to tell you about themselves! The treatment can help soothe and relax your baby so that the natural healing mechanisms are restored and balance is maintained.
Although it’s called ‘cranial’ osteopathy, the technique is directed at the whole body. In this way, it’s a truly holistic form of therapy and suitable for all ages.
How does Cranial Osteopathy work?
Cranial osteopaths have a highly developed sense of touch and are able to feel subtle changes of tension and tissue quality. These are most apparent in the cranial bones in the head which enables the diagnosis of areas of strain or dysfunction. Using skilled cranial osteopathic techniques the osteopath gently releases these tensions and restores the whole body’s natural rhythm and balance.
Would my baby benefit from Cranial Osteopathy?
Cranial Osteopathy can be very useful in assisting babies recover from the physical effects of birth. Compression of the skull happens normally during the birth process but, in some cases, can cause bruising, neck and jaw tensions and a changed head shape. These issues generally resolve themselves over time because bones are very soft and elastic at this young age. Cranial osteopathy can assist when this process is incomplete or needs adjusting and gently helps the body to heal.
The cranial nerves, which exit through the base of the skull, have wide-ranging effects. Some of these nerves go to structures in the head, such as the muscles that move the eye, whilst others pass further into the body, like the vagus nerve, which controls functions in swallowing and digestion. Cranial osteopathy can help relieve stress throughout the baby’s whole body and help them sleep better, feed better, cry less, improve bowel movements and generally be happier and more settled.
In particular, for babies the restriction around the jaw and the neck can lead to uncomfortable feeding and problems with wind and reflux. This irritability or unsettled behaviour during feeds makes the first few weeks very hard for both mother and child. Cranial osteopathy can help ease this jaw and neck tension and enable a positive feeding routine to continue.
